If you are considering a relocation from the United States to Canada, you need to know that there are some specific regulations for importing your car. Yes, bringing your car from the US to Canada, when you move there, is considered an act of importation. Because of that you will have to follow certain international regulations to properly register your car in Canada.
That in mind, here are three scenarios common to Clearit.ca importing a car from the United States to Canada.
SCENARIO #1: You Bought Your Vehicle in the United States
First, a disclaimer: There are a handful—maybe a half dozen—vehicle manufacturers who are based in the United States or who distribute their vehicles in the United States but are not allowed to be imported to Canada. More than likely this will not relate to your move, but if you are concerned of have any questions, you just need to check with the Canadian Registrar of Imported Vehicles (CRIV).
That said, if you bought your car in the United States (and it is not one of the excluded manufacturers), you need to have it inspected to ensure that it can, in fact, be certified for operation on Canadian roads. This is a very important step because without this certification you will not be allowed to drive your car in Canada, even if you are allowed to import it and even if you have paid all the associated fees, duties, taxes, etc.
SCENARIO #2: You Bought Your Vehicle In A Country Outside North America
Most cars that can be purchased in America—new or otherwise—will be able to import into Canada. Those which are not readily able to import will probably only need a simple modification for it to pass certification.
On the other hand, most cars sold outside the United States are not readily importable to Canada. Simply, they are not properly equipped for Canadian certification. Of course, the good news is that these vehicles can receive similar modifications to pass the regulations set forth in the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act (CMVSA).
SCENARIO #3: You Own A Non-Regulated Vehicle
